Diocese, Episcopal Church, & Anglican Communion

St. Luke's is part of a wider Church

Parishes in The Episcopal Church are part of a wider Church.  Geographically we are organized into dioceses, which in turn are part of a "national" Church, and connected to the global Church.  An Episcopal congregation is a "mission outpost" of the diocese.  This means that each congregation is participating in carrying out the Church's mission of reconciliation in their community and sharing in this with others throughout the diocese, wider Church, and the world.

St. Luke's is part of the Episcopal Diocese of Western Michigan, which in turn is part of The Episcopal Church (located throughout the United States and several foreign dioceses).  The Episcopal Church is part of the worldwide Anglican Communion.  The spiritual leader of our diocese is The Right Reverend Robert R. Gepert, the VIII bishop of the diocese.  The Presiding Bishop of the Episcoapl Church is the Most Reverend Katherine Jefferts Schori.  The Episcopal Church is in full communion with the Archbishop of Canterbury, the head of the Church of England and spiritual leader of Anglicans worldwide.  The current Archbishop of Canterbury is the Most Reverend Rowan Williams.
